Kevin De Bruyne has officially signed for Serie A champions Napoli as a free agent following his release from Manchester City, confirmed by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis on Thursday.
The Belgium international midfielder has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with an option for a third year at Napoli. He will reunite with his international teammate Romelu Lukaku and former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay at the Italian club.
De Bruyne, aged 33, ended a highly successful decade at Manchester City this past season. Under manager Pep Guardiola, he won six Premier League titles and lifted the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy in 2023.
Despite his tremendous achievements, De Bruyne’s latter years at City were hampered by injuries. Notably, two hamstring injuries limited his playing time significantly over the last two campaigns.
Napoli have made a significant statement by signing one of Europe’s best midfielders. The club aims to strengthen its squad ahead of a challenging season, where they will defend their Scudetto title and compete in an expanded UEFA Champions League schedule.
Last season, Antonio Conte’s Napoli edged out Inter Milan on the final day to claim their second Serie A title in three years. Unlike Inter who faced a congested European schedule, ultimately losing 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final Napoli had a relatively lighter calendar without European competition.
With De Bruyne now in their ranks, Napoli fans will be hopeful that his vision, creativity, and experience will elevate the team’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe.
The arrival of De Bruyne also strengthens Napoli’s midfield options as they prepare to take on the dual challenges of defending their league title and navigating the rigors of Champions League football.
