Kenyans, both within the country and abroad, have expressed strong opposition to the 2024-2025 finance bill due to its proposed increase in taxation. The widespread protests, branded as “Occupy Parliament” and accompanied by the hashtag #RejectFinanceBill, have drawn significant attention and support. The movement is notably spearheaded by Gen Z and human rights activists. Kenyans in unison have stated their stand by joining the 7 Days of Rage protests.

Since Thursday, 20th June 2024, the streets, churches, clubs, and businesses across Kenya have witnessed relentless protests led by the youth. The demonstrations have not only captivated national attention but have also garnered international solidarity, with Kenyans abroad staging their protests in support of their compatriots back home.

The ongoing protests have had a profound impact on the Kenyan economy, leading to widespread business closures and a significant slowdown in economic activity. Unlike previous protests, these demonstrations are marked by a notable unity among various tribes and a commitment to peaceful protest. The protestors have stated, “We are tribeless, peaceful, not armed!!!”

The opposition to the finance bill has triggered a significant shift in Kenyan politics, catalyzing the expression of widespread frustration among Kenyans and the rise of youth activism in political matters. Many citizens, feeling oppressed and barely surviving, have been galvanized into action. They are determined to continue their protests, drawing strength and legitimacy from Article 1 of the 2010 Constitution, which states: “All sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya and shall be exercised only in accordance with this Constitution.”

The protests have thus become a powerful manifestation of the people’s will, reflecting their demand for a more just, equitable economic policy and accountability from their leaders. Reflecting wise words from the reputable late president of Kenya His Excellence Mwai Kibaki who stated, “Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed”.
