Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday, thanks to Gonzalo Garcia’s 54th-minute header. The win booked the Spanish giants a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, who defeated Mexico’s Monterrey 2-1 in the last eight.

A Tactical and Physical Battle

The first half was a balanced affair with Juventus starting strongly under coach Igor Tudor, creating early chances including a notable opportunity for Randal Kolo Muani, whose attempted chip over Thibaut Courtois drifted just over the bar. Juventus moved the ball confidently, but Real Madrid grew into the game as the half progressed.

Real’s Jude Bellingham tested the Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio with a close-range effort, while Federico Valverde and Trent Alexander-Arnold came close to breaking the deadlock with long-range shots and dangerous crosses.

Real Madrid Takes Control After the Break

The second half saw Real Madrid increase their attacking threat. After several near misses, Alexander-Arnold delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, which Gonzalo Garcia met perfectly with a header, his third goal in four tournament games.

Juventus pushed back with Portuguese winger Francisco Conceicao forcing a fine save from Courtois. Real continued to press, with Valverde nearly doubling the lead with an overhead kick, and the crowd buzzing as Kylian Mbappe returned from illness to come on as a substitute in the 68th minute.

Despite Juventus’ spirited efforts, including a near miss from Nicolas Gonzalez and a crisp shot by Real’s Arda Guler saved by Di Gregorio, the single goal was enough for Madrid to advance.

Managerial Reflections

Xabi Alonso praised the team’s resilience and patience, especially highlighting Gonzalo Garcia’s performance, comparing him to Real Madrid legend Raul. He also expressed optimism about Mbappe’s return to full fitness ahead of the quarter-finals.

“We had to be patient, mature into the game, and grind it out. It’s a knockout game you have to grit your teeth and do what you have to do,” Alonso said.

Juventus coach Igor Tudor admitted his side was worn down by the match’s intensity, citing the physical toll of the game’s tension, heat, and the length of a demanding season.

“In the end, there was incredible tiredness. Ten of them wanted to be substituted,” Tudor said.
